CSX St Thomas Ross Street Subway 1987
Hello Larry! Looking to reach you. Thank you.
The crossing at 5:11, the posts where the X is on has slots for flashing red lights, but were never installed.
Lights installed now.
It took awhile.
She’s got chop
It sounds a bit different from 265H engines on JT56ACe (HXN3), more like GE.
maybe i am an odball but i think most rail fans and even just diesel engine fans would pay to hear this in person . like have a yard full of old trains that you load test for show every day. i would visit that rail museum stay all day and pay 100 entrance fee happily .
Hi 1916!
Classic
bet those people in london question why it was so big 🤣
London, ONTARIO.... Canada!.... NOT London, England.
Nice video Larry
That time EMD made an Alco 244 and it ended up being even worse than the original somehow
Not sure what kind of drugs you're on... but it's REALLY messing up your brain cells!!
We had 4 of those on our UP grain train out of des moines iowa headed to kc and 2 died south of Trenton Missouri and we couldn't make the hill up into polo. Went dead right there. Total junk these locomotives were. Electrical issues out the Wazoo
Wow, that turbo sounds amazing!
Beautiful diesel GM
I like the sound of the two-stroke much better.
I'll "second that" Sentiment!!
China gets all the best toys . would love to hear one in person but its a long way to go. its amazing to think such an american engineering project passing through london and then finding its destiny in the far east
Wow.!! Never knew that emd make 4 stroke engines !! It"s the first time I heard the chug from emd!! Sounds best from other locos 4 stroke locos!!
Mechanical music !
this does not sound like emd two stroke engine at all more like 7fdl 16 cylinder...
That's because it's NOT a 2 cycle (thank you - EPA!!! Not!!)..... this one is the "new & improved" 1010J engine, that is the seriously upgraded version of the 265H.... which was plagued with piston issues. as well as computer control issues... especially when positioned as a "lead" unit.... they were fine in DPU positions, other then the ongoing piston failure issue's. They've resolved all those issues, with the new 1010J prime-mover.
Love the sound of that chug!
Such a shame when they scrapped a lot of these because of the crappy prime mover. They could've at least installed a 710.
The funny thing is? The 12 cylinder version of the 265 engine proved to be far more reliable than the 16 cylinder version used in the SD90MAC.
@skeezix91..... That is exactly what EMD, did.... the swapped in.. the 710 series prime movers.
Lets see a one man crew do that switching maneuver!
That's a lovely video, we had a great summer that year. Love that GM sound brings back great memories.
I still cant believe emd put alco engine on the sd90s
Did they have to run every new 201 on pre service runs?
Yes.... there was another crew from GMD that arrived after we left to continue.
Hi dad can we go to the St Thomas mall From JJ 🎉
It's a shame that Caterpillar shuttered the GM Diesel Division in Canada, Train crews all over North America still say that the quietest Cabs came from London Ontario 😢
It's crazy to see how the St.. Thomas CASO was all double tracks and double diamonds crossing over L&PS tracks. It totally unrecognizable nowadays.😱
Sound Similar Amtrak GE Genesis engine
Love to see footage of the quad header someday
Classic.
It's unfortunate that it's so hard to hear what they are saying. I don't say that as a criticism though, merely an observation.
What were the biggest problems with this compelling prime mover? Was it rushed into production too quickly? Can the Cummins QSK95 save Progress Rail?
They had to redesign and add more material, I think the redesigned engine version weighed in about 10,000 lbs heavier and this resolved piston issues. Computer control was not well designed for a lead locomotive but they seemed to do quite well as DPUs or second units. In the end, the use of 6000 hp in a car body was not practical for the railroads.
Progress rail is a Caterpillar company. A direct competitor to Cummins.
@@markrhuett Interesting, since it's the QSK95 that's the power plant in the SD70ACe-T4.
The SD70ACE-T4 is powered by the 1010J, which is an updated version of the 265H in its 12 cylinder version, and not the QSK95. To my knowledge, no freight railroads are using the QSK95. Only the passenger locomotives such as the Siemens Charger units are powered by the QSK95.
@@christopherstephans3383...... Where did you Ever read That "Fairy Tale" ?!?!?? Lol The Imagination of some people's children!!!.... Incredible.
Dad (Murray Shaver) moved to St. Thomas in the early ‘40’s to be a fireman and engineman on the New York Central. Later he became the Local Chairman of that union and eventually the General Chairman for the Canadian division and 4 American divisions. But he never gave up going out on the line a few times a month. He worked through the transition to Amtrak. He retired at 63.
thanks for being the railway historian in this area, Larry!
worked with Joe in Welland in early 70's
very poignant Larry.
Great footage Larry. Sure wish there was sound. So many fantastic memories from half a century ago!!! I can't believe time has flown by so much. Thanks for this!!!
First time I encountered a pair of these in UP paint, I couldn’t get over the…..”interesting” sound of those prime movers. It did NOT sound anything like the typical turbocharged EMD 645 “purr” I was so used to. They sounded about as crappy as they were physically. Complete junk.
Your confusing the original "265H" prime-mover, with EMD's new "1010J" engine. Either way, personally... I'll stick with the 2 Strokes!
The unmistakable sound of a GE exhaust chug! Those are all B36-7s BTW.
Courte mais belle vidéo. Ces amateurs, souvent bénévoles, entretiennent notre patrimoine ferroviaire et le gardent vivant. Merci à eux. Amitiés de Belgique 🤗 .
Switching on the FLY, love it. I'm sure that's 'illegal' now.
Class
I think the point is, nobody is interested and nobody wants these locomotives. There is nothing interesting about railroads anymore. Might as well put more trucks on our already congested highways and freeways.
Boy that sounds mean should've named it mack an put a bull dog out on the nose👍👍👍👍👍
Not much whine without that gear driven turbocharger
Wow, what a fantastic video!!!! I was lucky enough as a child to ride shotgun on the enterprise briefly!! Love ireland and irish rail!!!
Even though it is a 4-stroke, there is still EMD unique growls lay there if you hear it more by headsets or earsets or anything albeit a bit quieter. The low and heavy bass sound of the engine is still in fact, identifies this as an EMD not anyone else.
This is the ALCo 251 resurrected. It's beautiful. God I wish the 90-H's were successful. This is an amazing sound, better than even a U-boat.
AGREED!!!!!
The only closest thing to the ALCO 251 series is actually the GE 7FDL's which literally are copied motors of them. This also explains why they still have mechanical unreliability and problems. The 265H's were motors of their own and by far the very worst, even more than the 7HDL's in the AC6000CW's.Even in the video the unit sounds like it's already going to tear itself apart at full throttle. CAT/PRLX's very mistake was bringing these motors back as the 1010J's for the SD70AH-T4's and ironically they also failed big time.
@@Slim_SlidThe 1010J is a failure? Source? Also, engine. Not motor.
@@pootispiker2866 Why do you think only 100 SD70AH-T4's were completed? Why do you think Norfolk Southern,KCS,and BNSF canceled all of their orders for them? Why do you think recently CSX finally got rid of the 10 ST70AH-T4's they owned? Why do you think Union Pacific immediately put all 90 SD70AH-T4's into storage just right after starting usage? Talk to any engineers and technicians who have dealt with them, they are junk. The GE ET44AH's overthrew them in sales because of better technology, traction motors, and tractive effort.
@@Slim_Slid That doesn't sound to me like they had many of the mechanical issues of the 265 at all.
This Is Either 1988 Or '89
Great video !
